Introduction: Living with the Unseen
My dear brothers and sisters, today we embark on a journey into a magnificent realm that surrounds us constantly, the noble world of the angels. Often, we get so caught up in the physical hustle and bustle of our daily lives that we forget we are never truly alone. Above us, beside us, and watching over us are magnificent creations of Almighty Allah who bow in continuous obedience, glorifying His supreme majesty. When we reflect upon the angels, our hearts find immense comfort in knowing that if human beings ever grow negligent or arrogant in their worship, Allah has countless pure beings who never disobey Him and never tire of glorifying His name.
Talking about the angels was a cherished methodology of the Prophets and Messengers. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon them all, frequently spoke to his companions about the angels even without them asking. As recorded in authentic traditions, he wanted his followers to understand that obedience to Allah is universal, grand, and majestic. Let us open our hearts and minds as we explore their breathtaking attributes, immense powers, and intimate connections to our daily lives.
The Creation of Angels from Light
To truly understand these glorious entities, we look to the authentic guidance of our Prophet. In Sahih Muslim, it is recorded that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, explained the distinct origins of creation:
“The angels were created from light, the jinn were created from a smokeless flame of fire, and Adam was created from what has been described to you.”
— Sahih Muslim
This sublime origin from light grants them purity, grace, and an extraordinary capacity for obedience. They were created long before human beings and jinn walked the earth. According to historical Islamic narrations, when the jinn previously inhabited the earth and caused widespread corruption and bloodshed, Allah sent forth the angels to discipline and remove them. Following that, Allah announced to the angels His divine decree: “Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.” (Refer to Quran 2:30 – Sahih International Translation). The angels humbly inquired whether this new creation would cause corruption just like their predecessors, while they themselves continuously glorified and praised Allah. Allah answered them with supreme wisdom: “Indeed, I know that which you do not know.”
Magnitude, Ranks, and Constant Worship
The sheer scale and magnitude of the angels are staggering to the human imagination, serving as a reminder of the infinite power of the Creator. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, described a magnificent angel among the bearers of the Throne in a Hasan (good) narration collected by Abu al-Shaykh in Al-Azmah:
“I have been given permission to speak about one of the angels of Allah who carry the Throne. The distance between the lobe of his ear and his shoulder is a journey of seven hundred years.”
— Sunan / Al-Azmah
Their worship is relentless, pure, and unbroken. The Prophet informed us, as recorded in Sunan collections (such as the narration of Abu Dharr), that among the angels are some who have been standing in prayer since the day they were created until the Trumpet is blown, some who have been bowing, and others who have been prostrating continuously. When the Trumpet is blown on the Day of Resurrection and they raise their heads, they will declare with utter humility: “Glory be to You, we have not worshipped You as You truly deserved to be worshipped!”
Furthermore, the Prophet described the immense weight and density of the heavens, noting that the heavens creak and groan—and they have every right to creak—because there is not even a space of four fingers except that an angel has placed his forehead upon it in prostration to Allah Almighty (Collected in Sunan Tirmidhi and authenticated).
Specialized Duties and Noble Functions
Allah has assigned magnificent duties to various angels, each fulfilling a specific pillar of divine administration in the universe:
- The Conveyance of Divine Revelation: Entrusted to the chief of angels, Jibril (Gabriel& The Holy Spirit) عليه السلام, who descended with the sacred words of Allah upon the hearts of the Prophets, including Musa, Isa, and our final Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon them all. He is also referred to in the Quran as Ruh al-Qudus or Ruh al-Amin.
- Managing Rain and Sustenance: Entrusted to Mika’il (Michael) عليه السلام, who oversees the rainfall and vegetation alongside assistant angels who guide every single drop of rain precisely to its designated place on earth.
- The Trumpet (Al-Soor): Entrusted to Israfil عليه السلام, who has kept the horn (Sur) in his mouth since his creation, bending his ear, lowering one side and raising the other, waiting anxiously for the divine command to blow it.
- The Extraction of Souls: Entrusted to the Angel of Death and his noble assistant angels, who gently or firmly reclaim souls at their appointed times, as stated in the Quran: “Say, ‘The angel of death will take you who has been entrusted with you. Then to your Lord you will be returned.'” (Refer to Quran 32:11 – Sahih International Translation).

- Recording Actions: The noble scribes (Kiraman Katibin) who document every word and deed, as stated: “And indeed, over you are keepers, Noble and recording; They know whatever you do.” (Refer to Quran 82:10-12 – Sahih International Translation).
The Profound Connection with Humanity
My dear friends, what brings immense warmth to our hearts is realizing that the angels are not distant beings; they interact with us in our everyday lives in beautiful ways:
1. In Our Congregational Prayers: The Prophet encouraged us to emulate the rows of the angels in prayer, standing shoulder-to-shoulder and closing the gaps. He taught his companions: “Will you not align yourselves in rows as the angels align themselves in rows before their Lord?” When asked how, he explained: “They complete the first rows and press close together in the row.” (Sahih Muslim).
2. During Night Prayers and Quran Recitation: When a believer stands up for night prayer and uses the Miswak (toothstick) to purify their mouth, an angel approaches them, listening closely and eventually placing its mouth over the reader’s mouth. Every single verse recited saved directly into the angel’s core!
3. Protection and Guardian Angels: Allah appoints guardian angels (Mu’aqqibat) to protect human beings from before and behind by Allah’s command: “For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah.” (Refer to Quran 13:11 – Sahih International Translation).
4. Gathering in Circles of Remembrance: Whenever people gather in a house of Allah or any place to remember Him, the angels surround them, fold their wings out of respect, envelop them in mercy, and mention them to those in the presence of the Almighty.
5. Companionship During Sleep: The Prophet, peace be upon him, taught us that when a person sleeps in a state of ritual purity (wudu), an angel spends the night inside their garment’s inner lining (sha’ar). Every time the person turns over on their bed, the angel supplicates: “O Allah, forgive him! O Allah, have mercy on him!” until they wake up.
Preserving Purity and Avoiding What Harms Angels
Because angels are pure and sensitive to foul odors and impurities, the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, gave clear instructions on how to maintain proper manners and etiquette around them:
He strictly prohibited coming to the mosque with offensive odors caused by eating raw garlic, onions, or anything similar, stating: “Whoever eats garlic or onion, let him stay away from us—or stay away from our mosque—for the angels are offended by what offends human beings.” (Sahih Muslim). This teaches us to maintain physical hygiene, sweet breaths, and clean garments, especially when standing before our Creator.
Additionally, the Prophet, pbuh, informed us that angels do not enter a house containing a dog (kept without a legitimate necessity like guarding livestock, hunting, or farming) or statues/images of living creatures that glorify vanity, as the presence of such things prevents the angels of mercy from entering. Instead, wholesome spaces filled with remembrance, Quran recitation, and cleanliness attract the constant presence of these noble beings.
As we conclude this heartfelt reflection, let us remember that our connection with the angels extends into the Hereafter. When the believers enter Paradise, the angels will welcome them from every single gate, saying: “Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home.” (Refer to Quran 13:23-24 – Sahih International Translation). May Allah make us among those whose company is cherished by the noble angels in this life and the next.
