More Beautiful Than the Moon
A Luminous Journey into the Physical Description of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
“My dear brothers and sisters, seekers of light and lovers of the Beloved ﷺ. Imagine for a moment, walking through the dreamy streets of Madinah… a city where every corner whispers secrets of the most beautiful soul to ever grace this earth.”
To describe the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is not merely an exercise in prose; it is a heart-centered reflection that increases our longing (shawq) for him. While we often hear of his character, his physical presence was equally a miracle from Allah. Based on authentic narrations from IslamQA, Sunnah.com, and the Shama’il of Al-Tirmidhi, let us walk through this radiant portrait.
The Luminous Countenance: Light Upon Light
The Prophet’s ﷺ face was described as having a circularity like the moon, yet more brilliant than the sun. His forehead was expansive and radiant. When he was pleased, his face would shine like a piece of the moon.
One of the most striking details recorded is his perspiration. Witnesses stated that his sweat would flow from his forehead like scattered pearls. It was not like ordinary sweat; it carried a fragrance more pleasant than musk and ambergris.
“O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner. And calling to Allah by His permission and an illuminating lamp.”
Eyes of Mercy and Arched Brows
His eyes ﷺ were wide and beautiful. The pupils were intensely black, and the whites were pure white, often described with a subtle, beautiful redness at the edges—a sign of health and vitality. His eyelashes were exceptionally long, giving the impression of naturally applied kohl (akhal).
His eyebrows were finely arched and delicate. There was a thin connection between them, nearly invisible unless viewed closely, which added a unique majesty to his gaze. His nose was prominent with a slight elevation in the middle, reflecting a sense of noble dignity.
A Smile that Illuminated the Room
He had a wide mouth (dali’ al-fam), which in Arabic culture is a sign of great eloquence and beauty. His lips were perfectly formed, and his teeth were brilliant white with small gaps between them.
Reflect on this: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, it was as if light shone from between his teeth. He was the most beautiful human being ever created, and his smile brought tranquility to every heart that witnessed it.
The Description of His Hair and Blessed Beard
His hair was jet black and wavy. The companions recorded three distinct lengths:
- 🌟 Wafra: When it reached his earlobes.
- 🌟 Limma: When it reached between his ears and shoulders.
- 🌟 Jumma: When it reached his noble shoulders.
His beard was thick, dark, and always impeccably groomed. He was the origin of all perfume; even without applying scent, he was naturally more fragrant than musk. Meticulous records show he had only twenty white hairs in his head and beard, mostly located at his temples.
The Witness of the Desert: Umm Ma’bad
How can we be so sure of these details? The testimony of Atika bint Khalid (Umm Ma’bad) serves as a powerful, persuasive proof. She was a woman who only saw him for one hour in the desert during the Hijrah, yet her description is the most eloquent ever recorded.
“I saw a man of visible radiance and a beautiful build… his eyes were intensely black and wide, his neck was long, and his voice had a slight, beautiful huskiness. From afar he was the most beautiful of people, and from near he was the most pleasant.”
This description proves that his beauty was not a matter of subjective love from his followers, but an objective, undeniable reality witnessed even by strangers.
The Poet’s Realization: Hassan ibn Thabit
“When I saw his lights shining,
I placed my hand over my eyes in awe of his beauty.
A spirit of light in a body of moonlight,
Like an ornament woven among the bright stars.”
A Final Invitation to Love
Dear truth seekers, the description of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is a call to the heart. He was created free from every flaw, as if he were created exactly as he wished to be. Our journey through his “Dreamy City” concludes with this: meeting him in this world may be difficult, but through love and the Sunnah, we shall meet him at the Hawd (the Basin) on the Day of Resurrection.
