Seeking the Truth: Demystifying Common Misconceptions About Islam & Prophethood

A compassionate, evidentiary journey into the heart of authentic Islamic theology, addressing modern criticisms with sincerity, logic, and scriptural truth.

My beautiful brothers and sisters, if you are looking at the landscape of religious discussion on the internet today, it is incredibly easy to feel overwhelmed. There are so many voices out there, so many arguments, and unfortunately, quite a few misconceptions floating around that can easily cloud the vision of an honest truth-seeker. You might hear assertions that seem compelling on the surface, but when we look closer with open minds and balanced hearts, the truth shines through with undeniable beauty and clarity.

Today, I want us to take a gentle, honest, and deeply intellectual look at some of the most prominent arguments surrounding Islamic monotheism (Tawheed) and the sublime nature of Prophethood. By using authentic sources, sound logic, and the timeless words of revelation, let us navigate these doubts together to discover the profound peace that comes with true, unadulterated faith.

1. The Oneness of the Creator: Why Multiplicity Contradicts Divine Perfection

Let us begin with a core logical premise. Some philosophical critics suggest that multiple eternal, divine entities could theoretically exist without conflict. However, early Islamic scholars and logicians beautifully pointed out that the concept of multiplicity inherently demands distinction. If two entities are distinct, there must be a defining characteristic that one possesses and the other lacks. This structural limitation implies composition (Tarkeeb), meaning each would be structurally or existentially dependent on boundaries or defining components.

True divinity requires absolute, uncompromised self-sufficiency (Al-Ghaniyy). If a creator is composed of parts or bound by dependencies, that creator is inherently limited and requires a primary fashioner to determine those boundaries. Therefore, logic itself dictates that the Supreme Cause of the universe must be uniquely One, completely un-composed, and entirely transcendent. The Holy Qur’an encapsulates this perfectly, inviting us to reflect on what would happen if control were divided:

لَوْ كَانَ فِيهِمَا آلِهَةٌ إِلَّا اللَّهُ لَفَسَدَتَا ۚ فَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

“Had there been within the heavens and earth gods besides Allah, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allah, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.”

Surah Al-Anbiya [21:22] (Sahih International)

2. Absolute Monotheism: Do Muslims Worship Muhammad or the Black Stone?

A frequent and highly inaccurate claim circulating in various corners of the web asserts that Islam secretly masks a form of polytheism. Critics sometimes point to the supreme respect given to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ or the ritualistic kissing of the Black Stone (Al-Hajar al-Aswad) during pilgrimage as evidence of idol veneration. But let’s clarify this with love, gentleness, and clear-cut, scriptural fact.

In Islam, worship (‘Ibadah) belongs solely and exclusively to Allah, the Creator of the universe. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is beloved, deeply revered, and followed as the final Messenger, but he is fundamentally a human being and a servant of God. The Qur’an commands the Prophet to tell humanity explicitly:

قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوحَىٰ إِلَيَّ أَنَّمَا إِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ

“Say, ‘I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God…'”

Surah Al-Kahf [18:110] (Sahih International)

Similarly, the physical acts of devotion around the Kaaba carry absolutely zero idolatrous meaning. As explicitly clarified in authentic Islamic jurisprudence (detailed extensively on IslamQA), the Black Stone is merely a creation that neither harms nor benefits on its own. We touch or gesture toward it solely out of loving obedience to follow the practice of the Prophet ﷺ.

“Amir bin Rabi’ah narrated that he saw Umar bin Al-Khattab kissing the Stone and saying: ‘I know that you are a stone, and you can neither benefit nor harm. Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissing you, I would not have kissed you.'”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Book 9, Hadith 93 (Authentic)

There is absolutely no internal contradiction or hidden paganism here. It is an act of pure, structured monotheism that beautifully unites believers around a singular point of direction on Earth.

3. The Trilemma of Prophethood: Liar, Lunatic, or True Messenger?

When modern secularists or critics fail to find factual gaps in the historical textual transmission of Islam, they often pivot to psychological dismissals. They try to claim that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was either intentionally deceitful, or that he was a highly intelligent man experiencing complex hallucinations or epileptic trances. However, this argument collapses completely under psychological and medical reality.

Let us analyze this logically. A person claiming to receive divine revelation can only fall into one of three distinct categories:

  • 1. A Deliberate Liar: A fraudulent person fabricates claims for worldly power, prestige, or wealth. Yet, the historical record shows the Prophet ﷺ consistently rejected immense offers of wealth, kingship, and luxury from the elites of Mecca in exchange for stopping his call. He lived an exceptionally simple, aesthetic life, often spending months without a cooked fire in his home.
  • 2. Mentally Ill / Hallucinating: Medical and neuro-scientific realities confirm that hallucinations and severe psychiatric delusions are highly disorganized, disruptive, and fleeting. A person undergoing ongoing clinical delusions cannot produce a highly sophisticated legal, spiritual, and linguistic masterpiece like the Qur’an over a span of 23 consistent years. Furthermore, a hallucinating individual experiences severe emotional disorientation upon waking up, whereas the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated immaculate strategic clarity, profound poise, and deep social intelligence.
  • 3. The Absolute Truth: If he was neither a liar nor delusional, the only remaining logical deduction is that he was exactly who he claimed to be: the true, divinely inspired Messenger of Allah.

This beautiful conclusion is backed by ancient biblical prophecies that detailed his precise location, lineage, and character such as the explicit geographical mention of the “Valley of Baca” (Mecca) in Psalms 84, and references across Isaiah 42. He was a completed promise to the world, and his life perfectly mirrored this divine appointment until the very end.
