How Do We Know Muhammad ﷺ Was a True Prophet? Examining the Evidence

Could Muhammad ﷺ have invented the Qur'an, or was he truly the final Messenger of God? Explore the historical facts, his remarkable character, and the evidence that continues to convince sincere truth-seekers.

Chapter Five

Was Muhammad ﷺ a Liar, Deluded, or Truly the Messenger of God?

Once a person becomes convinced that the universe has one Creator, another question naturally arises:

Has the Creator communicated with humanity?

Throughout history, many individuals have claimed to speak on behalf of God. Some were exposed as frauds. Others sought wealth, political power, or personal glory. Therefore, every claim to prophethood deserves careful examination.

The life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is no exception.

In fact, because Islam encourages reflection and sincere investigation, Muslims welcome thoughtful questions about his life, character, and message.

When historians examine the evidence honestly, three broad possibilities emerge.

  • He knowingly invented his message.
  • He sincerely believed he was receiving revelation but suffered from delusion.
  • He genuinely was the Messenger of Allah.

Let us examine each possibility with fairness and intellectual honesty.

Could He Have Been a Liar?

A successful lie normally brings its author some clear worldly benefit.

People fabricate stories to gain money, prestige, influence, or comfort.

Yet the biography of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ presents the opposite picture.

Long before receiving revelation, he was already known among his people as Al-Ameen_the Trustworthy.

Even those who rejected his message continued entrusting him with their valuables because they knew he never betrayed a trust.

When he began calling people to worship Allah alone, his worldly life became dramatically more difficult.

Rather than receiving riches, he endured persecution.

Rather than gaining comfort, he experienced hunger.

Rather than living in luxury, months would pass in his household without a fire being lit for cooking, and dates and water often constituted the family’s simple provisions.

He was mocked, insulted, physically attacked, boycotted, and forced to migrate from his beloved hometown.

These are not the actions of someone constructing an elaborate deception for personal comfort.

A Remarkable Historical Offer

The leaders of Quraysh attempted to end his mission by offering extraordinary incentives.

According to the early biographies, they proposed wealth, leadership, and social status if only he would abandon his call to worship Allah alone.

His response demonstrated unwavering commitment.

He refused every worldly offer and continued conveying the message despite the immense personal cost.

Someone pursuing power rarely rejects power when it is freely offered.

The Prophet ﷺ consistently chose hardship over compromise because, according to his testimony, he believed himself to be carrying the revelation of Allah.

Could He Have Been Deluded?

Another suggestion occasionally raised is that Muhammad ﷺ genuinely believed he was receiving revelation but was experiencing hallucinations or psychological delusions.

Modern medicine rightly recognizes that certain mental illnesses can involve altered perceptions or false beliefs.

However, such conditions also display recognizable patterns.

Individuals suffering from severe psychotic disorders typically experience fragmented thinking, impaired judgment, disorganized speech, and significant difficulty maintaining consistent executive functioning over long periods.

By contrast, the historical record portrays the Prophet ﷺ as a leader of extraordinary clarity, balance, and wisdom.

Over twenty-three years, he:

  • Conveyed the Qur’an with remarkable consistency.
  • Established a cohesive moral and legal framework.
  • Led a growing community through periods of peace and conflict.
  • Resolved complex disputes with wisdom.
  • Maintained strong family relationships and social responsibilities.
  • Inspired profound moral transformation in thousands of people.

This sustained pattern of coherent leadership does not resemble the clinical profile of someone incapacitated by severe psychological disorder.

While modern clinicians cannot diagnose a historical figure from fourteen centuries ago, the available historical evidence does not support the simplistic claim that revelation can be explained merely as mental illness. Such assertions often overlook both the complexity of psychiatric science and the extensive historical record.

The Qur’an’s Extraordinary Challenge

The Prophet ﷺ did not merely claim inspiration.

He conveyed a book that repeatedly challenged humanity to examine its origin.

The Qur’an openly invited its opponents to produce even a single chapter comparable to it if they believed it to be the work of a human being.

Qur’an — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:23)

“And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant, then produce a surah the like thereof…”

Sahih International Translation

This challenge has stood for more than fourteen centuries.

The Qur’an does not ask readers to accept its claims blindly.

Rather, it calls upon them to reflect, compare, and investigate.

His Character Strengthened His Claim

Even critics who rejected Islam often acknowledged Muhammad’s ﷺ honesty, courage, generosity, and integrity.

His companions observed him closely in private and in public.

His wife Khadijah رضي الله عنها, who knew him more intimately than anyone else, affirmed his noble character from the very beginning of revelation.

His enemies called him trustworthy before prophethood and struggled to accuse him of lying afterward.

The consistency between his character and his message remains one of the strongest historical evidences in support of his sincerity.

An Honest Reflection

If a person willingly sacrifices wealth, status, security, comfort, and even the safety of his own family for more than two decades—while maintaining unwavering consistency, exceptional moral character, and profound devotion to God—it becomes increasingly difficult to explain his life as the product of conscious deception.

The Islamic Conclusion

Islam teaches that Muhammad ﷺ was neither divine nor self-appointed.

He was the final Messenger sent by Allah to reaffirm the same essential message proclaimed by all previous prophets:

Worship Allah alone, live righteously, and prepare for the Day when every soul will stand before its Creator.

Accepting his prophethood therefore does not mean worshipping him.

Rather, it means recognizing that he faithfully conveyed Allah’s final revelation with honesty, courage, and complete dedication.

“The question is not merely whether Muhammad ﷺ claimed prophethood. The deeper question is whether any alternative explanation fully accounts for his life, his character, the Qur’an, and the enduring transformation he inspired.”

In the next chapter, by Allah’s will, grace and mercy,  we will examine another fascinating aspect of the evidence for Islam: the remarkable preservation of the Qur’an and why Muslims confidently affirm that its message has remained unchanged since it was revealed over fourteen centuries ago.
