The Night Journey (Isra and Mi’raj): Untold Facts About Prophet Muhammad’s Greatest Miracle

Discover the untold details of Isra and Mi'raj, the miraculous Night Journey of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Explore authentic narrations about the opening of his chest, Al-Buraq, the journey to Al-Aqsa Mosque, encounters with prophets, and the divine wisdom behind one of Islam's greatest miracles.

The Miraculous Night Journey: Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj and the Divine Comfort of the Prophet (ﷺ)

“My dear brothers, sisters, and truth-seekers across the world—whether you trace your faith through the branches of Islam or Christianity—come with me on an open-hearted journey back through time. Let us turn the pages of history together to explore a night where the boundaries of earth and the heavens faded away.”

1. Whispers of Pain: When the Earth Grew Narrow for the Beloved

The miraculous event of Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj (The Night Journey and Heavenly Ascension) was not an isolated display of supernatural power. To understand its magnificence, we must first look into the human heart of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). It occurred during a period of profound emotional sorrow, a year deeply marked in Islamic history as the Year of Grief (`Am al-Huzn). Within a brief window of time, the Prophet’s defensive shield in society—his beloved uncle Abu Talib—passed away. Soon after, his ultimate spiritual sanctuary, his devoted wife Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), left this world. She was the one who comforted him during his initial anxieties of revelation, wiping away his tears and assuring him of his noble character.

A Lesson in Divine Timing

When human doors slam shut, divine horizons swing open. Rejected by his hometown of Mecca, the Prophet (ﷺ) walked to the city of At-Ta’if seeking a sanctuary for his message. Instead, he was met with stones, flying insults, and physical injury until blood stained his blessed feet. Sitting beneath a vineyard orchard, he raised his hands toward the sky with a moving supplication that continues to touch souls to this day, crying out his weakness and total reliance upon the Almighty. The Night Journey was the immediate, glorious response to that broken heart—a supreme act of divine comfort.

2. The Purification of the Blessed Heart

Before ascending to view the cosmic realities of the seven heavens, a vital preparation had to take place. As the Prophet (ﷺ) lay resting near the Ka’bah in the sacred area known as Al-Hijr, the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) descended. This was the profound moment of Sharh as-Sadr (the expansion and physical purification of the chest). This miraculous event was recorded precisely within the authentic text of Sahih al-Bukhari. The Prophet (ﷺ) described the spiritual operation with beautiful clarity:

“…While I was at Mecca the roof of my house was opened and Gabriel descended, opened my chest, and washed it with Zamzam water. Then he brought a golden tray full of wisdom and faith and having poured its contents into my chest, he closed it….”

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 349 (See verification on Sunnah.com)
This was not merely a physical washing; it was a profound removal of human sorrow, clearing away earthly griefs to substitute them with pure heavenly resilience. The Almighty was preparing His Messenger’s capacity to witness the majestic realities of the heavens and stand firm in the presence of the Divine Throne.

3. Riding Al-Buraq: The Heavenly Steed of Light

To travel across the vast terrain between Mecca and Jerusalem in a single night, the Prophet (ﷺ) was provided with a majestic celestial creature named Al-Buraq. Derived from the Arabic root word for lightning (Barq), this animal transcended our standard physical understanding of speed and movement. In an authentic narration preserved within Sahih Muslim, the Prophet (ﷺ) described the creature’s appearance and staggering physical capabilities:

“I was brought al-Buraq Who is an animal white and long, larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule, who would place his hoof a distance equal to the range of version….”

— Sahih Muslim, Hadith 162a (See verification on Sunnah.com)
Imagine that incredible speed! With a single stride, this brilliant creature covered the entire distance its eyes could scan at the horizon line. It did not merely gallop across paths; it folded space and time effortlessly under the absolute command of its Creator.

An Encounter of Reverence: When the Prophet (ﷺ) approached to mount Al-Buraq, the creature initially stirred with excitement and shyness. Angel Jibril immediately addressed it, saying: “Is it towards Muhammad that you do this? No one more honorable to Allah has ever ridden you than him.” Upon hearing these profound words, the creature began to sweat out of sheer awe, humility, and deep respect for the Messenger of Allah (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3131).

4. Signs Along the Path: Miraculous Sightings on the Journey

The journey between the two sacred mosques was filled with physical signs that bridged the world of history and the world of the unseen. As the Prophet (ﷺ) cut through the silence of the night, three distinct milestones were shown to him:
  • Prophet Musa (Moses) Praying in His Grave: The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by the location of the red dune (Al-Kathib al-Ahmar) along the path to Jerusalem. There, he witnessed Prophet Musa standing and engaged in deep prayer inside his own grave (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2375a). This reality shows us that the prophets remain alive in a blissful, transitional state of existence (The Barzakh), enjoying the ultimate serenity of prayer even after passing from our earthly life.
  • The Sweet Fragrance of the Comber of Pharaoh’s Daughter: During the journey, a beautiful scent akin to pure musk filled the night air. Jibril explained that this sweet fragrance emanated from the burial place of the brave woman who combed the hair of Pharaoh’s daughter. When her comb had dropped and she proclaimed ‘Bismillah’ (In the name of Allah), she stood unwavering in her monotheistic faith against Pharaoh’s tyranny. She and her children were martyred, but her legacy was honored across time, sweetening the path of the Final Messenger.
  • The Meccan Caravan: The Prophet (ﷺ) also passed over real commercial caravans belonging to the Quraysh tribe as they made their way back across the desert. In one instance, he observed a caravan that had lost a camel and actively called out to guide them directly to its location. This observation served as a clear, irrefutable physical proof that silenced the skeptics when he returned to Mecca the following morning.

5. Jerusalem: The Gathering of Noble Prophethood

In a moment, Al-Buraq arrived at the historic grounds of Al-Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem—a blessed sanctuary whose surroundings are sanctified by God. The Quran beautifully documents this initial horizontal journey within the opening verse of Surah Al-Isra’:

“Exalted1 is He who took His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] by night from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”

Upon reaching the gates, the Prophet (ﷺ) tied Al-Buraq to the very ring used by the ancient prophets before him. Walking inside the sanctuary, he found himself leading every prophet and messenger sent to humanity in a unified prayer. This beautiful gathering stands as clear proof that the core message of monotheism—the worship of the One Creator—is a single, unbroken chain connecting Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all).
