Prophetic Wisdom vs. Modern Secularism: Finding Ultimate Truth, Design, and Justice in Islam

A compassionate journey through historical context, moral absolute boundaries, and the beautiful signs of a Creator.

My beautiful brothers and sisters, travelers on this journey of life, and every sincere seeker of truth out there: welcome. Have you ever paused to think about how we navigate this vast, complex world? We often find ourselves questioning the rules around us, looking into history, or gazing at the star-studded night sky wondering about our true purpose.

Today, let us look gently, deeply, and with an open heart into some of the most common questions raised about Islamic law, the lifestyle of the Blessed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and how divine revelation holds a mirror to the fragile, shifting nature of modern secular laws.

1. Extraordinary Blessings, Extraordinary Burdens: Understanding the Khasa’is

Sometimes, people look at history and ask a very simple question: “Why did the Prophet Muhammad have more than four wives simultaneously?” It is a natural question to ask when one looks from the outside. To understand this properly, we must look at the concept of Khasa’is—the unique legal rules and heavy obligations placed exclusively by God upon His Messenger, which did not apply to any ordinary Muslim.

These exceptions were never about personal ease or luxury; in fact, the rules governing his life were incredibly rigorous and physically grueling. Let us look at the reality of his daily devotion:

  • The Obligatory Night Prayer (Tahajjud): While standing in prayer deep into the night is a beautiful, voluntary act for you and me, for the Prophet, it was a strict legal obligation. He would stand in prayer before his Lord until his blessed feet would swell and crack from the sheer weight of his devotion.
  • Continuous Fasting (Wisal): The Prophet would regularly practice continuous fasting, joining multiple days and nights together without breaking his fast at sunset. When his beloved companions tried to imitate him out of pure love, he strictly forbade them from doing so, explaining that his Lord uniquely sustained and nourished him.
  • Heavy Daily Voluntary Prayers: On top of his immense societal responsibilities as a leader, judge, and teacher, he maintained a constant stream of prayer, including the mid-morning (Duha) prayers and twelve extra units (Sunnah Rawatib) firmly anchored to the five daily prayers.

2. The Deep Divine Wisdom Behind the Prophet’s Marriages

When we examine the timeline of the Prophet’s life, the narrative built by modern critics completely falls apart. From the prime of his youth at age twenty-five until her passing, he remained in a deeply devoted, completely monogamous marriage to a noble woman significantly senior to him—our beloved mother Khadijah (may God be pleased with her).

It was only later in life, amid heavy political upheaval and tribal wars, that his subsequent marriages took place. They were bound to profound social, tribal, and political wisdom:

With the sole exception of Aisha, every single woman the Prophet married was a widow or a divorcee. These were vulnerable women who had lost their financial security and social protection due to brutal tribal conflicts. Marrying them was an act of profound mercy, safety, and care.

Furthermore, these marriages forged vital political alliances that united warring factions and dissolved ancient tribal hatreds. For example, his marriage to Lady Safiyya, the daughter of a prominent Jewish chieftain, built a direct bridge of understanding and honor between communities. Marrying Lady Hafsa (the daughter of Umar) and Lady Aisha (the daughter of Abu Bakr) solidified the core brotherhood of leadership that would carry the message of Islam safely to the rest of the world.

3. Plural Marriage in History, Scripture, and Global Law

It is an interesting double standard in our modern world, isn’t it? If we open the scriptures of Judaism and Christianity, we find that the grand biblical prophets practiced extensive polygamy with absolutely no divine condemnation attached. The scriptures detail that esteemed prophets like Abraham, Moses, David, and Solomon practiced polygamy, with Solomon described as having hundreds of wives.

Yet, when we turn our eyes to contemporary Western legal frameworks, we notice a striking, illogical contradiction:

In many modern societies, a person can legally maintain an unlimited number of casual partners, mistresses, or short-term companions without any legal accountability. Yet, if a man seeks to enter a transparent, legally binding marriage contract with more than one woman—guaranteeing her full inheritance rights, social status, and permanent financial security—the law steps in to criminalize the contract. Ask yourself sincerely: which system truly honors and protects the rights of women?

4. The Absolute Islamic Condition of Uncompromising Justice

Islam did not invent polygyny; rather,Islam is the first major religious system in human history to restrict it, regulate it, and impose severe moral conditions upon it. The Divine Law limits the maximum number of wives to four, but immediately pairs it with a powerful, daunting warning from Allah Almighty:

The Noble Quran (Surah An-Nisa, 4:3)

“…but if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry] only one…”

Polygyny in Islam is a heavy, sacred burden demanding absolute emotional, physical, and financial equity. Because of these steep ethical requirements and the economic realities of life, the overwhelming majority of Muslims today naturally maintain a single wife. The spiritual consequences of failing this test of equity are terrifyingly severe. The Blessed Prophet warned us clearly:

“Anyone who has two wives and inclines to one of them will come on the Day of Resurrection with a side of his body inclining (paralyzed or dragging).”

5. Universal Scale: The Cosmic Proof of Supreme Majesty

Sometimes, an honest skeptic will look out into space through modern telescopes, observe the trillions of galaxies stretching across light-years, and say: “Organized religion feels so small and man-made. Why would the Creator of this unimaginably vast universe care about humans on this tiny speck of dust?”

But my friends, notice how beautiful the Islamic perspective is! Islam doesn’t hide from the staggering scale of the cosmos; rather, the Quran uses the mind-boggling vastness of space as a primary proof of God’s supreme power, wisdom, and majesty. The creation of the heavens and the earth is intentionally massive, so that we might recognize our own limits and submit to His infinite knowledge:

The Noble Quran (Surah Ghafir, 40:57)

“The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.”

Islam explicitly teaches us that we are not alone, nor are we the sole focus of creation. There are vast unseen realms, including creations like the Jinn and legions of angels, inhabiting domains known only to the Almighty. The immense cosmos isn’t proof of our insignificance; it is a stunning canvas showcasing the limitless artistry of the Divine.

6. Intelligent Design Written in the Fabric of Nature

You don’t even have to look through a telescope to find Him. Just look down at the ground beneath your feet. Consider the intricate world of ants and termites—tiny creatures working with complex architectural layouts, defensive military organizations, waste management routines, and structural monarchies. Who hardwired that sophisticated intelligence into their microscopic brains?

Or look at the soil outside your home. The exact same rain falls upon the very same dirt, yet from that identical water and earth, a spectacular variety of life emerges. One seed yields a vibrant red, sweet strawberry; another grows a deep green, tart lime; a third produces a towering, robust oak tree. The variety of colors, shapes, textures, and tastes drawing from the exact same chemical ingredients is an undeniable sign of purposeful, conscious design. It screams of intention, not accidental chaos.

7. The Collapse of Secular Morality and the “Harm Principle”

People often define religion as a simple “instruction manual for life.” And in truth, that is very accurate. Everyone walks through life using a manual—whether it is the timeless, perfect law revealed by the Creator, or the heavily flawed, experimental codes drawn up by human governments.

Secular philosophy proudly claims that morality can be boiled down to a single phrase: “As long as it doesn’t cause harm to others, it should be entirely legal and moral.” But when we examine this “Harm Principle” under a logical lens, we quickly see how it fails to establish clear, stable boundaries for human society:

  • The Trap of Consensual Taboos: If two fully consenting, adult biological relatives choose to engage in an intimate relationship inside their own home without reproducing, who is being physically harmed? Under a strict secular “harm principle,” this relationship cannot be logically forbidden. Yet, human intuition deeply knows it is fundamentally wrong. Secularism lacks the foundation to forbid it; Islam handles it instantly through divine boundaries.
  • Shifting Legal Goalposts: When morality relies purely on human consensus, the boundaries shift like quicksand. What was considered an absolute moral taboo, or a serious criminal offense a few generations ago, becomes completely normalized, legalized, and celebrated today simply because cultural attitudes drifted. This means right and wrong lose all permanent meaning.
  • Euthanasia and the Value of Life: Look at recent legal shifts across parts of the West, where young individuals suffering from chronic injuries or deep psychological struggles are now legally granted state-assisted euthanasia. Because secular systems struggle to define the absolute sanctity of life, they surrender to despair. In stark contrast, Islam views your life as a sacred, temporary trust from Allah. Suffering is never meaningless; it is a test endured with patience, cleaning away sins and building immense eternal rewards.

8. The Perfection of Divine Prohibitions: The Case of Alcohol

To see the stunning perfection of divine law over human ideas, look closely at how Islam deals with the issue of alcohol. Modern societies treat casual alcohol consumption as a standard, celebrated part of social interaction, attempting only to regulate the resulting chaos through drunk driving laws.

Yet, if you look at raw, empirical data provided by metropolitan police departments and health organizations globally, a chilling reality comes to light:

Societal SectorThe Real Impact of Alcohol Exposure
Public Safety & CrimeFuels an estimated 60% to 70% of nighttime violent crimes, physical assaults, and public property damage.
Domestic StabilityActs as the primary chemical accelerator behind severe domestic abuse, broken homes, and childhood trauma.
Systemic HealthCauses long-term destruction to the liver, nervous system breakdown, premature skin aging, and severe physical dependency.

By instituting an absolute, zero-tolerance prohibition on alcohol and gambling, Islamic law instantly cuts out these modern plagues at their very root, protecting the family unit and preserving human life. Without a fixed, unwavering revelation from a supreme Creator, societal morality collapses into a chaotic sea of personal preferences.

9. A Gentle Invitation to Reflection and Absolute Peace

My dear friends, let us understand one fundamental truth: when we stand up to pray, when we fast, or when we follow these divine guidelines, we are not doing a favor to God. Allah is entirely self-sufficient, completely free of any need for our worship.

These spiritual practices are a gift to us. They serve our deepest psychological, emotional, and social needs. Regular prayer instills an unshakeable inner peace, provides structured discipline to our frantic days, and brings people of every race, color, and economic background together shoulder-to-shoulder, completely wiping out discrimination and tribal arrogance.

We gently invite you to pick up the Quran. Read its pages with an open, reflective mind. Look at the balance of its design, feel the deep compassion in its guidance, and let your heart find the clarity it has been searching for.
